The function of the jaw joint (temporomandibular joint), a very sensitive joint influenced by the autonomic nervous system, affects many different parts of the body. Irregularities of the teeth, incorrectly treated teeth or spaces between teeth, can cause an abnormal occlusion which can generate a chain reaction of nerves and muscles resulting in problems with spine, shoulders, pelvis, or knee joints.
In collaboration with osteopaths, orthopedic specialists and physiotherapists, holistic dentistry can provide a remedy.
After comprehensive functional analysis and measurement of the jaw, the patient receives a removable bite splint which is adapted to their jaw joint and usually worn at night.
In very problematic cases (if the occlusion is completely abnormal) or prior to a comprehensive application of dental prostheses, we – in collaboration with our dental laboratory – utilise the computer-based ‘ZEBRIS’ system to record and analyse the joint’s movements.
